DoorDash Tipping: How Much to Tip on DoorDash (and Who Gets It)

The short answer

Tip, and tip at checkout. Your Dasher keeps 100% of it, it doesn’t lower what DoorDash pays them, and in most places it’s part of the pay they see before deciding to take your order.

Need a number? 15 to 20% of the food, and never just a buck or two on a small order.

How much to tip on DoorDash, why the checkout tip affects how fast your order gets picked up, how to add a tip after delivery, and how much the Dasher keeps.

Tipping on DoorDash is optional. Nobody’s going to make you. But your tip is the one part of the Dasher’s pay you control, and it has more to do with how fast your food shows up than you’d think.

How much to tip on DoorDash

DoorDash doesn’t set an amount, so it’s your call. Here’s how we’d think about it.

Start at 15 to 20% of your food total, like you’d tip at a sit-down restaurant. Then bump it when you’re asking more of the trip: a long drive, bad weather, stairs, a big heavy grocery order.

On small orders, think in dollars, not percent. The Dasher drives the same distance for a $12 burrito as for a $60 family order, and 15% of $12 is $1.80. That’s not getting anyone excited.

Food totalTip at 15%Tip at 20%
$15$2.25$3.00
$30$4.50$6.00
$60$9.00$12.00

Why the checkout tip matters most

When a Dasher gets an offer, the screen shows guaranteed pay: the minimum they’ll take home from that order. That number includes base pay and customer tips. So the tip you set at checkout is part of what your Dasher sees when deciding if your order is worth the drive.

Base pay doesn’t move with your tip. It runs $2 to $10+ per offer depending on time, distance and how desirable the order is, and it never changes based on the tip amount. What you tip goes straight on top.

DoorDash has pretty much said the quiet part out loud, too. When it tested a new tipping screen, it told customers that orders without a tip are less appealing to Dashers and more likely to be rejected, so a no-tip order may take longer to get accepted. You can still skip the tip. Just don’t be shocked when your food sits.

One exception. In a few markets, New York City included, tipping only happens after checkout. There, add the tip once the order’s on its way or after it lands.

How to tip on DoorDash

  • Before you order: pick or type in your tip at checkout. This is the one that counts most.
  • While it’s on the way: once a Dasher is assigned, tap “Add Tip” on the order progress screen.
  • After it lands: go to the Orders tab, tap “View Receipt,” then “Add tip.” You’ve got up to 30 days after the order.
  • Support can add or change a tip on any completed order up to 30 days after, if the app gives you trouble.
  • Cash at the door always works.

It’s one tip per order, so pick your number. If you add your tip after checkout, DoorDash may refund your original charge and re-charge the new total with the tip, so two lines on your card isn’t a mistake.

Some restaurant orders don’t have a tip option at all. That’s how the store set it up, not you being cheap, and cash still works fine.

How much of the tip does the Dasher get?

All of it. Dashers receive 100% of customer tips DoorDash receives. Tips added at checkout show up in the Dasher’s earnings right away, and if you add one later, they get a push notification with the new total. Cash goes straight into their pocket.

That’s why tips matter so much on this gig. With base pay as low as $2 an offer, the tip is often what makes a trip worth taking.

Every app handles this a little differently. If you also get groceries delivered, here’s how Instacart tipping and Shipt tipping work. Ordering from Caviar? A Dasher brings that too, so here’s what to tip on Caviar.

On the other side of the bag?

If you’d rather be the one getting tipped, DoorDash is one of the easiest gigs to start. Here’s the honest version.

DoorDash (for Dashers)

Best for: earning the tips instead of paying them

What it is
DoorDash’s Dasher gig: you deliver restaurant, grocery, convenience and pet store orders as an independent contractor.
What you do
Go online in the Dasher app, accept offers, pick up, drop off. Car, scooter or motorcycle, or a bike in select cities.
How much it pays
Base pay of $2 to $10+ per offer, plus promos like Peak Pay and Challenges, plus 100% of tips. Weekly deposit, Fast Pay once a day for $1.99, or free instant deposits with the Crimson card.
The catch
Low-tip orders are a real thing, and the base pay on its own can be as low as $2.

Worth it? Yes if you’re 18+ (19 in 13 states, 21 in California) and want flexible hours. Being picky about offers is the whole game.

DoorDash tipping FAQ

Do DoorDash drivers see the tip before accepting?

In most places, yes, as part of the number. The offer screen shows guaranteed pay, the minimum the Dasher will take home, and that figure includes base pay and customer tips. It doesn’t break the tip out on its own. In markets where you can only tip after checkout, like New York City, the tip isn’t there yet.

Does DoorDash take any of the tip?

No. Dashers get 100% of the customer tips DoorDash receives, and base pay doesn’t change based on how much you tip.

Can you change your tip on DoorDash after delivery?

You can add a tip from the Orders tab (View Receipt, then Add tip) up to 30 days after the order, or contact support to add or change a tip on a completed order within 30 days.

Can you tip a DoorDash driver in cash?

Yes. Cash tips are fine, and they go straight to the Dasher.

Is tipping required on DoorDash?

No, it’s optional. But if you skip it, your order may take longer to be accepted. DoorDash has said no-tip orders are less appealing to Dashers.
