Here’s the thing people miss. A Tasker isn’t a server living on tips. They set their own hourly rate, so the price you agreed to is already what they decided their time is worth.
So a tip on TaskRabbit is a thank-you.
Skip it for a job that was just fine? Nobody’s going to chase you. But for a Tasker who showed up on time, brought the right tools and hauled your couch up three flights, a tip is how you say so.
How much to tip on TaskRabbit
There’s no official number. TaskRabbit only sets the ceiling.
This is how we’d size it.
Quick, easy job that went fine. A TV mount, one flat-pack bookshelf, a short errand. No tip is OK, a few bucks is nice.
A normal job done well. Cleaning, assembly, yard work, waiting in a line for you. Go with 10% to 15% of the task total.
Heavy, dirty or longer than planned. Moving help, stairs, a job that ran way over, or a Tasker who fixed something you didn’t book them for. That’s 20% territory, up to the 25% cap.
Want to tip more than 25%? You can’t do it in the app. TaskRabbit’s tipping policy says to contact Customer Support for anything bigger.
The rules that actually matter
You have 24 hours. Tipping opens once your Tasker sends the invoice and stays open for 24 hours. Missed it? Customer Support can still add one for you.
Review first, then tip. The app won’t show the tip option until you’ve rated your Tasker.
The fees aren’t a tip. Your receipt has a Trust and Support fee (a Service Fee in California and Massachusetts), and none of it goes to the Tasker. The tip line does, along with any expenses they covered.
A tip can’t replace the bill. Tips only count as money on top of what the task costs, never instead of paying for it.
You’ll see two charges. The invoice shows up on your card as a TaskRabbit Receipt and the tip as a separate TaskRabbit Tip. Not a double charge.
How to tip your Tasker
In the app:
- Tap Tasks at the bottom and find the job.
- Tap Review and tip.
- Rate your Tasker and tap Submit.
- Pick the tip amount and tap Submit again.
On the website:
- Log in and click My Tasks at the top.
- Click Review and Tip on the job.
- Rate your Tasker and click Submit.
- Choose the amount and click Submit.
Buttons moved? The tipping steps in TaskRabbit’s help center get updated when the app changes.
Thinking about being the Tasker instead?
If you’re handy, the other side of this app can pay. It’s also more work to get into than most gig economy apps.
TaskRabbit (Tasker)
Best for: handy people who want to set their own rate
- What it is
- A marketplace for local odd jobs like furniture assembly, moving help, cleaning and mounting. Taskers are independent contractors.
- What you do
- Get the separate Tasker app, list your skills, draw the area you’ll work in, set your hours and take jobs.
- How much it pays
- You set your own hourly rate and minimum (the platform minimum is one hour). Client fees don’t come out of your pay, and you keep 100% of tips and expenses. Money goes through Stripe to a checking account.
- The catch
- There’s a one-time, non-refundable $25 registration fee, and paying it doesn’t guarantee you get in. You need a US Social Security number, to be 18+, to pass a background and ID check and to live in a city TaskRabbit is active in.
Worth it? Only if you’ve got real skills and tools. The $25 is a bet on getting approved, so read the requirements before you pay it.
Not sold? Delivery is easier to start. The best food delivery jobs take you from sign-up to your first order a lot faster, and the side gigs that actually pay list has plenty that need no app approval at all.
TaskRabbit tipping questions
Is tipping required on TaskRabbit?
No, it’s optional. If you do tip, the Tasker gets 100% of it on top of their hourly rate.
Can I tip my Tasker after 24 hours?
Not in the app. The tip window closes 24 hours after the invoice, but you can contact TaskRabbit’s Customer Support and ask them to add it.
Is there a limit on how much I can tip?
Yes. Tips are capped at 25% of the task total. To go higher you have to go through Customer Support.
Does the Trust and Support fee go to the Tasker?
No. That fee doesn’t change what the Tasker is paid. Tips and expenses are what go to them.
Tipping on other apps works differently. Here’s how much to tip on Instacart, plus guides to DoorDash tipping and Shipt tipping. More gigs live under app-based gigs.
