Can you make $1,000 in a day?
Honestly? Only by selling something worth $1,000. A second car you barely drive, a motorcycle, a gaming PC, a good camera kit, a set of tools, a watch or jewelry you never wear.
Work won’t do it in a day for most people. Even at the top of the $18 to $25 an hour Amazon says most Flex drivers earn, $1,000 is 40 hours. That’s a week, not a day.
For one big sale, price it off what similar items actually sold for, meet the buyer somewhere public and busy, and get paid before the item leaves your hands. Never take a check for more than the price. That’s the oldest scam there is. More selling tips are on the $700 page.
Option 1: two hard weeks of gig work
Split $1,000 over two weeks and it’s about 20 to 28 hours a week at $18 to $25 an hour. That’s a real part-time job on top of everything else, but it’s money you keep and don’t pay back.
Two apps that fit, depending on whether you have a car:
DoorDash
Best for: the most orders in the most towns
- What it is
- Delivering restaurant, grocery and convenience orders as an independent contractor.
- What you do
- Dash when you want, by car, scooter, motorcycle or bike (bike in select cities). Accept the offers worth your time.
- How much it pays
- Base pay of $2 to $10+ per offer plus Peak Pay, Challenges and other promotions, plus 100% of tips. The offer you see before accepting is the minimum guaranteed amount. Weekly pay usually lands by Wednesday night. Fast Pay is once a day for $1.99, and the Crimson card gives no-fee instant deposits.
- The catch
- No published hourly average, and $2 offers exist. Decline the junk ones. 18+ (19 in some states, 21 in California), with a background check first.
Worth it? Yes if you’ll be picky about offers. It works almost everywhere, which counts for a lot.
Instawork
Best for: shifts if you do not want to drive
- What it is
- A shift-work app where Pros pick up short-term jobs with local businesses.
- What you do
- Choose shifts near you and work them.
- How much it pays
- Up to $30 an hour, per Instawork, with an average across US markets and positions of over $20 an hour. Pay is instant for eligible shifts, and it costs nothing to start.
- The catch
- You get vetted first (background check and phone screen), and it is only in some cities.
Worth it? Only if it runs in your city. Booked shifts make a $1,000 goal easier to plan than random orders.
Want the day-by-day version? The $900 one-week plan lays it out. For the steadier long game, see jobs that pay $20 an hour and the gig economy apps worth signing up for.
Option 2: borrow it, the cheap way
Here’s what $1,000 costs from the three places people usually turn to:
| Where | What it costs | How fast | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current paycheck advance | Free, or the Instant Access Fee shown in the app if you want it fast | Up to an hour with the fee, or within 3 business days free | Only if your paycheck lands at Current, and the amount is whatever you qualify for |
| Credit union payday alternative loan | Up to 28% APR, plus an application charge of no more than $20 | Depends on the credit union | The $200 to $1,000 kind needs one month of membership first |
| Payday loan | $10 to $30 per $100. At $15 per $100, $1,000 for two weeks is $150 | Fast | Almost 400% APR, and a rollover adds another charge while you still owe it all |
Current Paycheck Advance
Best for: covering $1,000 when your paycheck already lands there
- What it is
- A paycheck advance from Current, a financial technology company (not a bank). Its bank accounts are held at Choice Financial Group or Cross River Bank.
- What you do
- Have your pay deposited into Current. The app shows the advance you can take, then you choose instant or free.
- How much it pays
- Up to $1,000 before payday for eligible customers. No credit check, nothing reported to the credit bureaus, and no charge unless you pick instant access. The free version typically lands within 3 business days.
- The catch
- You need an eligible payroll deposit of at least $200 coming to Current, and money moved in from PayPal, Venmo, Cash App or Zelle doesn’t count. Not available in Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Wisconsin or D.C. The full $1,000 isn’t guaranteed.
Worth it? Only if you already get paid through Current. If you do, start here before any loan.
No paycheck at Current? A credit union is your next stop. Federal credit unions can make payday alternative loans of $200 to $1,000 for one to six months, at no more than 28% APR. Some also offer a newer version up to $2,000 over as long as 12 months with no membership wait. They can’t roll the loan over, and you can only have one at a time.
You can look up credit unions near you with the NCUA credit union locator, then call and ask if they offer PALs.
Option 3: the expensive way (skip it)
A payday loan is quick, and that’s about the only good thing about it. They’re usually due in two to four weeks and charge $10 to $30 for every $100. If you can’t pay it all back, some states let the lender roll it over: you pay the charge, you still owe the full amount, and you get hit with another charge later.
And watch out for the “guaranteed approval, bad credit OK” loans that ask for an upfront payment before they send money. The FTC’s advice is simple: don’t pay for a promise. Real lenders don’t do that. Same goes for any job that wants you to deposit a check and send part of it back. The full scam list is in our need money now guide.
FAQ
How can I make $1,000 fast in a day?
Sell one valuable thing you don’t need. Gig work tops out well under $1,000 a day for most people. At $25 an hour it’s 40 hours.
Can I get $1,000 with bad credit?
Current doesn’t check your credit for its paycheck advance, but you need your paycheck going there. Credit unions making PALs are told to check proof of income, like a couple of recent pay stubs, so steady pay matters more there. Anyone who guarantees a loan before checking anything and wants money upfront is running a scam.
How can I make $1,000 a month on the side?
That’s a different problem than $1,000 this week, and an easier one. A few hours of gig work most weeks gets you there. Start with our digital side hustles and the big list of side gigs.
Need less? Making $900 fast and making $600 fast each take a different route. Browse more side hustles, check what’s paying right now, or see the apps that pay you real money for small extra cash.
