I Need Money Now: What Actually Pays Today (and What to Skip)

The short answer

Today, the money that actually shows up is money you sell something for or a shift you work. Most apps and advances land tomorrow or later.

Fastest legit options: sell something locally for cash, run a delivery shift if you’re already approved (Uber Eats lets you cash out up to 6 times a day), or take a Current paycheck advance if your paycheck already lands in Current. Skip payday loans. A $15 charge per $100 works out to almost 400% APR.

Need money now? Here's what can actually hit your account today or tomorrow: a quick sale, a delivery shift, a paycheck advance, and the loans and scams to skip.

No fluff here. If you need money now, you need to know two things about every option: how fast it hits your account and what it costs you. That’s the whole page.

What can land today, tomorrow or this week

Today: sell one thing

This is the fastest money there is, and it doesn’t need an app approval or a credit check.

Look around for stuff people buy fast: a game console or games, a phone or tablet you replaced, tools, a bike, a TV, baby gear your kid outgrew, furniture that’s in decent shape. Price it a bit under what similar stuff is going for locally and say “cash or instant payment at pickup” in the post.

Meet somewhere public and busy. Count the cash before you hand anything over.

And never take a check from a stranger, especially one for more than your price. The FTC is blunt about this: even when the money shows up in your account, that doesn’t mean the check is good, and fake checks can take weeks to bounce. By then you owe your bank the whole thing. Need more ideas on what to sell and where? See how to make $700 fast, which is mostly about selling stuff.

Today: work a shift (if you are already approved)

Signing up for a delivery app today won’t put money in your pocket today. Both of these run a background check first. If you’re already approved, though, this is the most reliable same-day cash on the page.

Uber Eats

Best for: cashing out more than once a day

What it is
Delivering food, groceries and packages through the Uber Driver app.
What you do
Turn on the app, accept the orders you want and deliver by car, bike, scooter or on foot (depends on your city). You see the fare, plus any upfront tip, before you accept.
How much it pays
Base fare plus promotions plus 100% of your tips. Instant Pay sends it to your debit card up to 6 times a day for $1.25 each time, or free after every trip with the Uber Pro Card. Otherwise it goes out weekly.
The catch
Background screening before your first order. 19+ to deliver by car (21 in California and New York State).

Worth it? Yes if you are already approved. Work a few hours and cash out tonight.

DoorDash

Best for: lots of orders in most towns

What it is
DoorDash’s delivery gig. You’re an independent contractor delivering restaurant, grocery and convenience orders.
What you do
Accept delivery offers in the Dasher app and drop them off by car, scooter or bike (bike in select cities).
How much it pays
Base pay of $2 to $10+ per offer, plus promotions and 100% of tips. Regular pay comes weekly and usually shows up by Wednesday night. Fast Pay gets it to your debit card once a day for $1.99, and the DoorDash Crimson card gets no-fee instant deposits after every dash.
The catch
Some offers pay only $2 base, so be picky. Background check first, and you need to be 18 (19 in some states, 21 in California).

Worth it? Yes if you already dash. Take Fast Pay once at the end of the night, not after every order.

Sign up to Dash

Not approved anywhere yet? Sign up today anyway so you have it next time. DoorDash vs. Uber Eats helps you pick which one to start with.

Paycheck advance: only if your paycheck already lands there

A paycheck advance is the cheapest fast money if you have a job. The catch nobody says out loud: you usually have to be getting paid into that app already.

That’s the deal with Current. To qualify, you need an eligible payroll deposit of at least $200 landing at Current. Opening an account today won’t fix today, because you have no paycheck there yet.

Current Paycheck Advance

Best for: a gap before payday when you already bank there

What it is
A money app (a fintech, not a bank) with a paycheck advance built in. Its banking services come from Choice Financial Group or Cross River Bank, both FDIC members.
What you do
Get your pay deposited into Current. The app then shows how much you can advance, and you pick instant or free.
How much it pays
Up to $1,000 before payday for eligible customers. Free within 3 business days, or in up to an hour if you pay the Instant Access Fee (the app shows the amount when you ask). No credit check, and it doesn’t show up on your credit report.
The catch
Not available in Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Wisconsin or D.C. The amount you get is whatever the app offers you, not automatically $1,000. It’s paid back out of your next paycheck.

Worth it? Only if your paycheck already lands in Current. Then it beats any loan on this page, especially if you can wait for the free version.

Don’t bank with Current? Ask your boss. Plenty of employers will advance part of a paycheck you’ve already earned, or have a pay-early option through payroll. It’s an awkward email, sure, but it costs nothing.

Tomorrow: app money that cashes out fast

Apps won’t solve a big emergency. They can cover a small one by tomorrow, though, as long as you pick the ones that pay out quick. I’ve used all three of these.

Freecash

Best for: instant PayPal once you are verified

What it is
A rewards site and app that pays for games, app trials, surveys and other offers.
What you do
Finish one offer to unlock the welcome bonus, then keep doing the offers that pay best for your time.
How much it pays
$10 welcome bonus after your first offer. Most PayPal, crypto and gift card withdrawals are instant. Your first withdrawal needs ID verification and $5 to $20 depending on your region, then PayPal starts at $5.
The catch
Do the ID check (selfie plus ID) right away or your first cash-out sits. 16+ only.

Worth it? Yes if you need $10 to $20 by tomorrow. It’s the fastest cash-out of the apps here.

Start on Freecash

Testerup

Best for: the $10 bonus plus game goals

What it is
An app that pays you to test mobile games and take surveys.
What you do
Pick a game or survey. Each offer shows what it pays before you start.
How much it pays
$10 welcome bonus. Payouts go to PayPal, Venmo (US), a Visa virtual card or an Amazon gift card, usually within 24 hours and up to 3 business days. PayPal and Venmo payouts lose 5%.
The catch
Game goals can take a few days, and there is a face check before your first payout. 18+.

Worth it? Yes for the bonus. Just don’t count on game goals for rent money this week.

Start on Testerup

Bigcash is the third one. You cash out to PayPal or gift cards, and its App Store listing says payments go out within 36 hours. For the full list, here are the apps that pay you real money.

If you have to borrow, borrow from a credit union

Federal credit unions can offer something called a payday alternative loan (PAL). It’s the grown-up version of a payday loan.

The smaller kind runs $200 to $1,000 over one to six months, and you have to be a member for at least a month first. The newer kind goes up to $2,000 over up to 12 months and doesn’t make you wait. Either way the rate tops out at 28% APR, the application charge can’t go over $20, and they can’t roll the loan over on you.

Already in a credit union? Call them today and ask if they do PALs. Not every one does.

Payday loans: skip them

Here’s why. A payday loan is usually $500 or less, due in two to four weeks, and the charge runs $10 to $30 for every $100 you borrow. The CFPB’s own example: borrow $300, pay back $345 two weeks later. That $15 per $100 works out to an APR of almost 400%.

Then comes the rollover. Can’t pay it all on the due date? Some states let you pay just the charge and push it out, and you still owe the full $300 plus another charge. That’s how a two-week loan turns into a six-month problem.

Fast money scams to walk away from

When you’re desperate, scammers can smell it. These are the big ones:

  • A loan that’s “guaranteed” before anyone looks at your application, then asks for an upfront payment for “insurance” or “processing.” Legit lenders don’t do that. The FTC’s rule of thumb: don’t pay for a promise.
  • A buyer or “employer” who sends you a check, asks you to deposit it and send part of it back by gift card, wire, crypto or a payment app. That’s a fake check scam every time.
  • A job that makes you pay to start. Honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job.
  • A “reshipping” job where you get packages at home and mail them somewhere else. The FTC says reshipping goods is never a real job. The stuff is usually bought with stolen cards.

FAQ

How can I get money today with no job?

Sell something locally for cash, or do a paid favor for a neighbor (yard work, moving a couch, walking a dog). If you’re already approved on Uber Eats or DoorDash, a shift is your best bet. Paycheck advances need a paycheck, so they’re out.

What app gives you money instantly?

None hands you cash just for signing up. Freecash is the closest: once your ID is verified, most of its PayPal cash-outs are instant. Uber Eats Instant Pay and DoorDash Fast Pay are instant too, but only for money you earned delivering.

Can I get a cash advance with no direct deposit?

Not from Current. It needs an eligible payroll deposit of at least $200 going to Current, and transfers from PayPal, Venmo, Cash App or Zelle don’t count. A credit union payday alternative loan is the better route if you don’t have a paycheck going there.

Is a payday loan ever worth it?

Almost never. At $15 per $100 for two weeks, you’re paying an APR of almost 400%. Ask your employer for an advance or call a credit union first.

Need a smaller amount? Making $20 fast is a lot easier than you’d think. Need a bigger number? How to make $1,000 fast lays out the work versus borrowing math. And before you pick an app, check what’s paying right now. More ideas in our side hustles section.
