So is it worth it? If you’re 21 or older, you’ve got a 4-door midsize car or bigger, and blocks show up in your area, yeah. It’s one of the better delivery gigs going.
Under 21, or driving a 2-door? Then it’s a no, and you can skip to the alternatives at the bottom.
What a shift on Amazon Flex actually looks like
Flex doesn’t do shifts like a regular job. You book blocks, a set window where you pick up a load and run a route. How long you’re out depends on what you’re delivering:
| Block type | Typical length | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon.com | 3 to 6 hours | Packages from a delivery station to customers |
| Amazon Fresh | 2 to 4 hours | Groceries and household items from a delivery station |
| Amazon Now | Under 1 hour | Short blocks |
| Instant offers | About an hour and a half, on average | Same-day offers you get by marking yourself available |
Before you book, every block shows the date, the type (Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market and so on), what you’ll earn, the start time and how long it should take. So you never take a route blind. You can reserve up to a week ahead or grab same-day offers in the app.
Bailing has rules. Cancel at least 45 minutes before a block starts and your standing is fine. Rack up multiple late cancellations and Amazon may cut your eligibility to deliver. Don’t grab blocks you aren’t sure you’ll work.
Amazon doesn’t set a weight limit, but it does tell drivers to bring a cart or dolly for heavy packages. Take the hint.
The pay, and what comes out of it
Here’s the pitch in plain numbers. Most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, and Amazon always contributes at least $15 to $19 per scheduled hour, depending on your location and demand. Tips come on top where customers can tip, and they’re 100% yours.
Run a 4-hour block through that. The guaranteed floor works out to $60 to $76. At the range most drivers hit, it’s $72 to $100. (That’s our math from Amazon’s figures, before tips.)
Now the part people skip. You’re an independent contractor, and you’re responsible for your own expenses. No gas money, no mileage. A 3 to 6 hour route in your own car burns real gas, so figure out what your car costs you per mile before you decide that $18 an hour is really $18 an hour.
How fast Amazon Flex pays
Pretty fast, by gig standards. You choose which weekdays you get paid, and daily is allowed.
Cashing out is free to the Amazon Flex Debit Card, and free to your bank account if you can wait until the same or next business day. Want bank access faster? That’s 50 cents. Cashing out to any other debit card is also 50 cents. Instant Pay is free for Flex Debit Card holders, though blocks where customers can tip pay out 27 hours after you finish.
What you need to drive for Amazon Flex
- 21 or older
- A 4-door midsize sedan or bigger, like an SUV (no motorcycles or scooters)
- A valid driver’s license and personal auto insurance that meets your local rules
- Your Social Security number and a checking or savings account
- Pass a background check that includes your motor vehicle records
- Android 14 or higher, or an iPhone on iOS 17 or higher
Sign-up is quick on paper. Most people finish the onboarding documents in under an hour and can start delivering in less than a week.
The real wait is whether Flex is taking drivers near you. If it isn’t, you tap “Join List” and Amazon emails you if spots open. There’s no timeline on that, so don’t plan your month around it.
Is Amazon Flex worth it?

- Amazon’s own delivery gig. You deliver Amazon packages and groceries in your own car, in blocks you book.
- What you do
- Reserve blocks up to a week out or grab same-day offers, pick up at a delivery station, and run the route in the Flex app.

- Amazon says most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, and it guarantees at least $15 to $19 per scheduled hour depending on location and demand. Tips are extra where customers can tip, and you keep 100%. You pick your paydays, and cashing out to the Amazon Flex Debit Card is free.
- The catch
- You have to be 21 with a 4-door midsize car or bigger, gas and wear on the car are all yours, and blocks can be limited in your area.
Worth it? Yes if you’re 21+, your car qualifies and blocks actually open up near you. It’s the only big delivery gig that puts an hourly range on the page, and that’s worth a lot.
Flex not hiring near you?
Lots of people end up on the interest list. Don’t just wait. DoorDash takes drivers at 18 in most states, and Uber Eats lets you deliver on a bike or on foot where your city allows it, so neither one cares what you drive.
